Watch and learn from those more experienced than you because they know how the industry works, advises Huma Qureshi, newly appointed staff writer at Observer Money.

Ms Qureshi's new role involves writing for the magazine's 'What's New' section, providing the latest information on financial services and products. She will also write the weekly e-update for Observer Money subscribers and contribute to the High Life section, inspiring readers who want to enjoy their financial success.

After completing a degree in English literature and French at the University of Warwick, she joined Legalease Publishing in September 2004 working on Lex magazine, The Legal 500 and In-House Lawyer magazine.

During a nine-week internship at the Observer she contributed to Observer Money, Observer Food Monthly and the Observer Magazine, and was then offered a staff writer position at Observer Money.

"I guess the fact that I moved to this position from the internship is a pretty exciting achievement," she told journalism.co.uk.

"Now the biggest challenge will be injecting my own personal touch into the magazine."

Her advice to would-be journalists is passed on from one of her previous editors: "Watch and learn from those around you who’ve been in the game for longer than you have and know how it works.

"Mix pushiness with humility and enthusiasm: when you're starting out, don't imply that you know more than other people, don't suggest that anything's beneath you and don't flounce out."
