Previously working as an internal communications manager at Yorkshire Building Society, Ms Atkin will replace John Murray who has moved to Centaur Communications as editor of Lending Strategy.
Ms Atkin started her career at MGF as a reporter in 1994 and was promoted to deputy editor and then editor during her four-year stint at the title.
Ms Atkin will now face the challenge of "reacquainting myself with the wider industry and key players" .
She advises budding journalists to "take opportunities that come your way even if they seem impossible or bizarre - you never know what will happen unless you try".
Ms Atkin studied sociology at the Polytechnic of North London and has had no formal journalistic training.
