The Financial Times has made Jonathan Ford chief leader writer, with overall responsibility for writing and commissioning the FT’s editorials. He will oversee a team of four leader writers.

Ford rejoins the FT after recently leaving Reuters, who last year bought Breakingviews, the financial website he launched with former FT journalist Hugo Dixon in 2000.

He replaces David Gardner, who has been appointed international affairs editor and will be based in London. Quentin Peel, previously international affairs editor, takes up the newly created post of chief Berlin correspondent.

Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times, said: "I am delighted with these appointments which will strengthen our comment pages and our foreign coverage."
