She will start in the role on September 1 having taken over the job from Conor McNicholas, who resigned from the post in June, a release from the magazine said.
Murison began her career with NME as a junior staff writer in 2003 and later became new bands and features editor. She left her deputy editor position in February to become music director at Nylon magazine in New York.
"Editor of NME has to be up there as one of the all-time dream jobs - and certainly the only one I'd ever consider coming back to a British 'summer' for," said Murison in the release.
