Bennett began his career in Lowestoft in 1988 as a trainee journalist for Eastern Counties Newspapers, parent company of the Lowestoft Journal and the Eastern Daily Press. Three years later he was appointed chief reporter, working on both titles.
After shift work with national newspapers in London, he joined ITV Anglia as news editor in 2006.
"I loved it at Anglia" Bennett said, "they've got a good bunch of journalists, but obviously there's increasing uncertainty about its long-term future".
After three and a half years away from the company he is clearly happy to be back:
"The Journal is a paper I know very well, and I feel very privileged to be given the chance to become its editor [...] It's good to be back among so many familiar faces. Things have changed quite a bit in the three and half years since I left for Anglia, and there's the challenge of the new CMS system to come. But everyone's been very welcoming and helped me settle in quickly."
Bennett takes over the role from Russell Cook who was recently appointed head of news at Archant Suffolk's Ipswich office.
