Commenting on her appointment, which commences in the new year, Ms Fox said: "News Group Digital has fantastically strong online and offline brands, and has already created innovative opportunities for readers to engage in websites and mobile technology.
"They have used their excellent levels of UK traffic and the strong faith readers have in the products, to launch, develop and grow key facilities which are leading the way for other publishers to follow.
"I'm very much looking forward to joining such a talented team and assisting in their continued success."
Head of community, Danny Dagan, added: "We are delighted with Ilana's appointment as community editor. She brings with her a wealth of experience and will play a key role in promoting user-generated content as a central piece in our strategy."
While at Associated Northcliffe Digital Ms Fox implemented and oversaw some key developments, creating blogs for journalists such as Peter Hitchens and also launched the reader comments on the Mail online. She recently worked on the launch of London Lite, integrating This is London's UGC into the publications entertainment listings and letters page.
