Hazlewood, who will begin next month, will be the agency's first full-time ex-pat correspondent in Mumbai.
He joined AFP's London office in 2005 having previously worked twice for the Press Association between 1998-2003 and 2004-5.
Hazlewood, whose new role is his first overseas posting, has also worked for BBC radio in Birmingham.
"The job will involve covering India's ongoing transformation into a global powerhouse, its effects on the country and people," said Hazlewood.
