Burgis previously worked as a Johannesburg correspondent for the title covering southern Africa.
Prior to this Burgis was a freelancer for the Telegraph, Guardian, Mirror and others, and spent a year stringing in Chile.
His new job involves covering politics, economies and business stories in West Africa. He describes West Africa as the world's most fascinating, but least covered region.
"Its oil producers are of strategic interest to any world power you care to mention, and its nations seem to display vitality and volatility in roughly equal measure," he said.
