Mr Meichtry will be based in Paris, report to Alessandra Galloni, Southern European bureau chief, and be responsible for covering luxury-goods conglomerates and writing about fashion and lifestyle trends across the continent.
His stories will also feature on Heard on the Runway - the Journal's free fashion blog.
Mr Meichtry joined the Journal in March 2006 as a news assistant in Rome covering Italian politics and business and the Vatican.
Prior to this he was an intern in Milan at Italy Daily, the Italian news section of the International Herald Tribune.
