The University of Southampton has won student website of the year at the Guardian's Student Media Awards.

Judges praised the team on wessexscene.co.uk for knowing their audience well and creating a lively, informative, tabloid style.

Andy Wilson, Southampton's student union president certainly felt the award was due: "It is high time the site won the award. Well done to everyone who has had a hand to play in it."

This was the first Guardian award for Wessex Scene, which has been shortlisted for best student site on three previous years.

Awards were presented by comedian Dave Gorman at London's Bridge Bar on 10 November. The web team won £500 prize money, plane tickets and work experience at the Guardian newspaper.
