Tech City News, Vice and the Monocle took gold at The Lovie Awards today, with the Guardian, Financial Times and Huffington Post all securing silver-level recognition.

The London-based awards celebrate "the entire breadth of content created for the internet", with accolades covering five main categories: websites, mobile and applications, internet video, online advertising and social. Each category is then split into different sub-categories. A panel of judges decide on the winners of the gold, silver and bronze awards.

Within the website category, Tech City News took the gold prize for news website, ahead of the Huffington Post which got silver, and the Financial Times, with bronze.

Tech City News launched earlier this year
with the aim of giving technology journalism "a bit of a kick up the arse".

"At just 9 months old I'm thrilled we already held our own against the FT and Huffington Post, two giants of the media world," Alex Wood, editor of Tech City News, told Journalism.co.uk by email.

"Our next challenge is moving from digital to print with our new magazine launching in December".

Tech City News also won the People's Lovie award in the news category, as chosen by the public using an online voting system.

Vice was recognised with gold and the People's Lovie for its Istanbul Rising video, in the documentary section of the online video category. Here is more on Journalism.co.uk about Vice's approach to video.

The Monocle was awarded gold in the website category, for best editorial writing.

SoundCloud took gold and the People's Lovie in the mobile and applications category, for a media streaming service, while the Guardian's new Witness app, which lets users submit content to the news outlet, took silver in the news sub-category of mobile and applications.

And the Financial Times also took silver in the news tablet sub-category. It appears there was no gold winner for either the news or news tablet sub-categories of mobile and applications.

Winners will be presented with their trophies at an event held on 13 November.
