The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has given a $2.4 million (£1.23m) grant to the American University's School of Communication.

The investment will help expand the university's Institute for Interactive Journalism or J-Lab, which has recently moved to the campus.

The lab is aimed at helping 'journalists and citizens use digital technologies to develop new ways of participating in public life', a release from the organisation said.

The grant will be used to fund new citizen media projects and to launch five community news projects.

J-Lab will also create new training modules and update its websites with the money.
