Specialised journalists and publishers serving a niche audience will be the focus of Journalism.co.uk's next event for media professionals on the industry's frontline.

Following on from the success of our sell-out online journalism conference in January, news:rewired – the nouveau niche will focus on digital skills, tools and technologies for individuals covering a particular industry or community.

Held at the London offices of media partner MSN UK, the event will include practical case studies and ideas on mobile publishing, building interactive features online, managing online communities around specialist content and developing paid-for services. The BBC College of Journalism have also been named as a media partner.

"There's plenty of guidance and advice for journalists and media professionals when it comes to generalist news reporting and journalism online, but niche titles and websites must cater for a different audience, with specialist needs and interests. There are thousands of these publications in the UK alone and nurturing a niche is becoming increasingly important for non-specialist news organisations looking to build revenue and new audiences," said Laura Oliver, editor of Journalism.co.uk.

"A recent study by the US Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ) suggested that niche is the future for new and traditional media organisations, with more focused news coverage appealing to engaged audiences and providing opportunities to make money. Our new event will look at the challenges of working for niche audiences and how a specialism can be the basis for a strong business online."
