As part of the ABC News on Campus programme, the network will create multimedia bureaus at Arizona State, Syracuse, Florida, North Carolina and Texas universities so that students can 'report on stories in their area and produce a wide array of content for ABC News' various digital and broadcast platforms'.
According to the TV network, each bureau will have a team of paid student staffers, including a bureau chief, and will open in September 2008.
Training and mentoring will be provided by the network along with an annual budget that students manage.
"These college digital bureaus will extend the newsgathering reach of ABC News throughout the country," said David Westin, president of ABC News.
"In addition, they will enable us to nurture bright young journalism students, giving them hands-on training from some of the most seasoned news professionals in the business and opportunities to see their work appear on ABC News platforms."
