Speaking at a one-day ContentBiz seminar on Selling Subscriptions to Internet Content held at the National Press Club in Washington, USA last May, publishers said branding was crucial and outlined their top marketing tips. These included:
• Purchasing paid listings on search engines such as Lycos.
• Using experts to optimise search engine rankings
• Buying adverts in other people's email newsletters - with paid-fors being marginally more successful than free ones. This approach is more effective than using rented email lists
• Using affiliate programmes such as www.befree.com .
The seminar featured contributions from key personnel from Ancestry.com, The Bull Market Report, Hoovers and ConsumerReports.org.
