The online science, medicine and technology source for journalists - www.alphagalileo.org - has launched a new service that help journalists source experts to provide background and quotes for news stories.

Journalists can either search for experts online or use a more general e-mail service that uses keywords to match experts with enquiries.

AlphaGalileo has recently been nominated as the leading internet service for European science, medicine and technology news by the independent market research agency MORI.

Three-quarters of more than 150 journalists surveyed last autumn said they thought the service was effective and 20 per cent said they had written more stories on UK and European science, medicine or technology issues as a consequence.

The two-year-old media service now has more than 2,000 registered users.

Nearly two-thirds of those contacted said they referred to the website when preparing a story and 97 per cent said they preferred to receive information about stories via e-mail or other web-based resources.

Alphagalileo is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, the Office of Science and Technology, the Wellcome Trust and other German and French science organisations.
