Sky News has announced the appointment of Andrew Hawken as its new head of digital media, replacing Julian March who moves to ITV.

As announced earlier this year March has been appointed as ITV News & Sport's new head of digital media.

Hawken will be working with Sky's editorial and technical teams in the development of the channel's output across all its digital platforms, including Skynews.com, its iPhone app and the recently launched iPad app.

According to a release announcing his appointment Hawken joined BSkyB in 2006 as editorial director for its online portal.

Sky claims during his time in this role, Hawken helped to grow unique users across the network by nearly 50 per cent.

His previous work has included the role of general manager of msn.com, where he was in charge of editorial, planning and product development, the release adds.

"Andrew's huge wealth of editorial and new media experience puts him in prime position to drive forward Sky News' digital offering," head of Sky News John Ryley, said in a statement.

"Sky News has always been at the forefront of the digital media arena and I'm confident Andrew will guarantee its future success."
