The Associated Press (AP) has announced plans for an iPhone application to give access to the agency's new mobile news service.

The programme, which was debuted at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco yesterday, will deliver AP news, photos and videos to the phone, a news release from the agency said.

The application is the latest stage in AP's Mobile News Network – launched last month, which offers AP stories with content from local newspapers filtered by postcode on a mobile.

The iPhone application will also enable users to submit content to the AP through their devices with the agency keen to attract submissions in this way.

"This is an easy way to forward news to AP if you happen to be at the scene of breaking news," Jane Seagrave, senior vice president for global product development at AP, said in the release.

The new iPhone programme is expected to be available in the next few weeks.
