Fourteen Asian papers have formed an internet alliance to promote professional journalism across the region and reduce dependence on western media.

The Asia News Network operates through an extranet, accessible only to network members. Each member contributes about five stories a day to the site.

The articles can then be taken freely by any member for publication in their own paper or individual sites.

The group also publishes a joint site at http://www.asianewsnet.net, covering the whole of Asia and the Pacific regions.

Collaboration between member companies is encouraged, with the sharing of staff and resources, including exchange programs for journalists.

A spokesman said: "Network members help one another whenever they can through sharing of facilities and human resources. In the event of a coverage by a reporter of one newspaper to another country, the network member in that country shall extend support by means of free use of its library system and email and make available contacts known by the network member."

Alliance members include Bangladesh's Daily Star, China's Beijing and Hong Kong Daily Editions, India's Statesman, Japan's Daily Yomiuri and Singapore's Straits Times.
