BBC TV News has broadcast its first-ever video report sent via the internet instead of traditional satellite link-up, and plans to expand its use of the web for data transfer.

The video report, covering the US Anthrax panic, was sent from Miami as an MPEG2 via File Transfer Protocol (FTP), the technology normally used for transferring web pages to the net. It was broadcast on BBC Breakfast last month.

The transmission of the 163 megabyte recording took about 40 minutes and saved the network about 500 British pounds, when compared with a satellite connection.

Chris Reed, BBC TV's media relations manager, said: "This is good news for the BBC as it means our news staff will have access to a lot more news footage. It also means we can use different bulletins for different services, such as BBC News 24, BBC 1 and 2, and other broadcast channels."
