Union members will vote on strike action unless the BBC abandons its plan to cut thousands of jobs.

Journalists' union the NUJ, broadcast union BECTU and technical union AMICUS are due to meet BBC managers tomorrow. They are expected to demand an end to plans for job losses and compulsory redundancies, as well as safeguards on the working conditions of outsourced staff.

"The BBC management have a window of opportunity to enter meaningful talks with staff representatives. If they slam the window shut we will act," said NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear.

"If BBC management won’t stand up for staff and licence-fee payers - we will."

On Monday the corporation announced a further 2,200 job cuts in its across editorial departments. Director general Mark Thompson said the cuts were painful but necessary to prove the BBC's commitment to value for money.
