The BBC has won three awards at the eighth annual Webbys, the industry awards for consumer websites.

BBC News won best news site, beating competition from Al-Jazeera.net and NationalGeographic.com. The BBC also won the awards for best sport and best education sites.

"This is fantastic recognition from the international internet industry of the quality and creativity of bbc.co.uk," said Ashley Highfield, BBC Director of New Media & Technology.

Other winners included Fray.com, for best print and zine site, and TheOnion.com, which won its fifth Webby award for best humour site.
