News agency BNO News, which began as a breaking news Twitter service, is withdrawing its iPhone application as it expands its wire service.

The organisation launched the iPhone app in August 2009 prior to handing control of its Twitter account @breakingnews to MSNBC and announcing plans to become a news agency.

The BNO News wire was launched in January and in a release today founder Michael van Poppel said the decision to close the app was part of its transformation into a paid-for service.

"In 2009 we decided to shift our focus and eventually offer our services solely to media organisations and other companies that want to make use of a news service," says van Poppel, in the release.

"As our wire services are growing, our content is expanding, and our company is quickly expanding, we want to give our clients the full advantage by only offering services directly to them.

"Our team has build an impressive newsgathering system over the past several years and we are now able to provide full daily news coverage to our clients (...) Unfortunately, only offering services to our clients also means we have decided to end our iPhone services."
