New features will be launched by video technology firm Brightcove as part of an agreement with a German newspaper website.

Brightcove's video player will now be used on ZEIT ONLINE's site with video embedded within news articles on the site, a spokeswoman for Brightcove told Journalism.co.uk.

The video player now allows users to share and embed video clips on third-party sites, although this has not yet been switched on on the Die Zeit site.

All video on the site will be embedded, using the new player, within article and section homepages. No dedicated video archive section on the site will be created, Brightcove confirmed.

Speaking to Journalism.co.uk in June, Brightcove CEO Jeremy Allaire said it was a good time for publishers to be investing in online content to counter the decline of traditional mediums and audiences, in particular from an advertising perspective.

"These are companies who obviously have an existing business that's under immense pressure. In many ways newspapers were among the first media businesses to get to the web. They've been able to establish pretty reasonably sized end user bases and audience - audiences that are larger than many of the broadcasters' website. As an online platform its a pretty strong position to be in," he said.

The company already provides the technology behind Johnston Press and Guardian.co.uk's online video. In May it signed a deal with Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.

Allaire also told Journalism.co.uk about plans to launch a mobile video tool for newsgathering and distribution. In June the technology firm announced a partnership with Qik to encourage users to create and publish their own video clips.
