A British journalist held hostage in Pakistan since March has been released.

Asad Qureshi, a British national of Pakistani origin, was abducted in the area of North Waziristan where he was carrying out research for a film reportedly commissioned by Channel 4.

According to a report by the Associated Press, a Foreign Office spokesman has confirmed his release and said its consular staff were providing assistance.

Khalid Khawaja, an intelligence official travelling with Qureshi as a guide, was executed by the kidnappers in April while the fate of a third captive, Sultan Amir Tarar is "not immediately clear", the report added.

Mainstream media have reported that they did not previously cover Qureshi's abduction at the request of the Channel 4 which feared media coverage could harm efforts for his release.
