Johnston Press claims these figures show it is on track to break even this year. The company, which has 74 local web sites, says total page impressions have grown from 325,000 to more than one million per week.
The company has announced plans to buy Regional Independent Media (RIM), which includes the Yorkshire Post newspaper and Fish4, in a deal worth £560 million.
Tim Bowdler, chief executive of Johnston Press, said new media activities were now "an integral part of our publishing portfolio". He added that the acquisition may lead to a national database driven by the regional press.
RIM has 29 web sites that complement its press titles. Mr Bowdler said these sites would continue following the acquisition.
