Although only a tiny fraction of the population can access the internet, the new rules are far reaching as they ban all information deemed harmful to the government and state that only those with official permission are allowed internet accounts.
Worse still, nobody is allowed to create web pages without official permission and all political material is banned.
The rules leave the Myanmar Post and Telecommunications as a monopoly and the only internet service provider.
It is currently illegal to own a computer without a licence.
