Plans to merge the websites of the Herald newspaper titles will result in redundancies, an article on Scottish media news site Allmediascotland has claimed.

Sources claim that between 15 and 20 jobs will be lost as the group integrates news and online operations across The Herald, Sunday Herald and the Glasgow Evening Times, with the introduction of a centralised news hub for all three publications.

According to the report, a single website will be introduced for the three titles and news will be published directly to the internet rather than after it has appeared in a print edition.

Exclusive news stories, it is reported, will continue to be reserved for the print version of the papers.

At the time of publication no one from Newsquest had responded to Journalism.co.uk's request for a comment.

In response to the story on Allmediascotland, a comment by a Herald group employee under the pseudonym of Watchingbrief said the changes were supported, but that the proposed redundancies were unnecessary at this point in time.

"They say the new system will allow for a smaller workforce, but the fact is the new system is months away being installed, so they have little idea of how it will all pan out," the commenter wrote.

"Despite all this, they have given people until November 23 to apply for voluntary [redundancy]. So people will be away well before the new system is in.... It stinks of slashing jobs for more profit, or to pay for the new system."
