PEN Canada, the writers’ campaign group, has launched a new web project as part of its freedom of expression campaign.

The new micro-site is part of the year-long Freedom of Expression and Impunity campaign to publicise the threat of unpunished crimes against journalists and writers around the world.

Run in partnership with the Writers in Prison Committee of International PEN, PEN America and Mexico PEN, the site explores the issues around impunity and provides campaign materials.

"The mini-site will be crucial as a meeting point for PEN centres to share their knowledge and experience, so we hope that the web site will be an important legacy of the campaign," said Julie Payne, PEN Canada representative.

The next event organised by the project will be the Day of the Imprisoned Writer on 15 November.

Pen Canada campaigns on behalf of persecuted and imprisoned writers and journalists internationally, supports exiled writers and campaigns against censorship.

"The web is an absolutely central part of our work - both in our reception and dissemination of information," said Ms Payne.

"For instance, as a member of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX), we are able to receive timely information from almost 60 different freedom of expression groups around the globe - and share vital information in return."

The next PEN Canada project will be the three-year Readers and Writers Program. Funded by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the project will allow exiled writers and journalists to publish their work online. PEN Canada also plans to expand its web site to include an archive of national affairs cases.
