The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma has awarded an annual $5,000 prize for excellence in traumatic coverage to the the non-profit investigative organisation and its collaborator, the New York Times magazine.
The "Deadly Choices at Memorial" feature marked the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and revealed the healthcare confusion in the aftermath of the disaster. Its reporter, ProPublica's Sherri Fink was praised by the Dart Center judges for her "knowledge, persistence and commitment to tell the story from all sides and on every level".
The St. Petersburg Times also received a Dart Award for its feature 'For Their Own Good', an investigative series that examined stories of men who were brutally abused as children while under the care of the Florida School for Boys, and the ongoing impact on their lives.
Honourable mentions were given to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Detroit Free Press and an independent television documentary, 'Baker Boys: Inside the Surge.'
