The UK Association of Online Publishers (AOP) has launched a temporary section on its website www.ukaop.org.uk that features a selection of its members’ digital editions.
Example publications include digital facsimile versions of the UK newspapers the Evening Standard, Guardian, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Sunday Times and the Times Educational Supplement (TES). Also featured are UK magazines IT Week, New Scientist and PC Magazine.
The digital versions employ a range of new technologies (not just Adobe's PDF standard) and are free to browse. You can also view details of circulation and subscription models, sections published and frequency.
The AOP currently represents approximately 130 online publishers including Associated New Media, BBC, BSkyB, The Economist Group, Emap Media, FT.com, Guardian Unlimited, Haymarket, Hollinger Telegraph New Media, Independent Digital, IPC Media, News International, PPAi, Redwood New Media, Reed Business Information and Which?.
Many AOP members believe that digital circulation figures should be included in the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) headline figure, in the same way that regional editions, and the new tabloid editions of broadsheets, are included in the print total.
The AOP Board met this month with Chris Boyd, chief executive of ABC, and Jan Pitt, director of business-to-business at ABC. The AOP agreed to promote digital editions to the media community, and AOP will put forward a representative to participate in an ABC working group that will agree the rules under which digital circulation should be audited.
* The Guardian and Observer digital edition paid-for service was officially launched today. All users will now have to pay a monthly subscription to access digital editions of these UK broadsheet newspapers. A 30 per cent discount is available to all people who subscribe before midnight (GMT) 8 March - go to http://www.guardian.co.uk/digitaledition .
