Spanish media company Prisa is sueing ratings service Nielsen for allegedly 'downgrading' audience figures for the website of its newspaper El Pais.

In September, Prisa announced they would be pursuing the case after Nielsen decided that traffic going towards an ad for ElPais.com, which featured on other websites, was being counted as part of the audience figures for the newspaper's own site.

According to Agence France-Presse, Prisa has confirmed that its internet arm Pisacom and El Pais are suing Nielsen in a New York court "based on the damage caused by the unjustified downward revision in the number of unique visitors of ElPais.com during the current year."

"The lawsuit argues that due to the serious negligence on the part of Nielsen in its measurement of audience figures for ElPais.com, El Pais and Prisa suffered serious damages due to lost advertisement this year," Prisa said in a statement.

The media company will be represented by Washington-based law firm Howrey LLP.
