Europe's UEFA 2004 tournament has attracted record numbers of fans to the internet, with more than 800,000 logging on to UK sports sites every day.

Figures from web traffic analysts Nielsen//NetRatingsshow that BBC Sport attracted more than 900,000 users during the first week of the competition. Sky Sports, Yahoo! Sports and the official UEFA Euro 2004 site all drew between 150,000 and 200,000 users over the same period.

The statistics also showed that web traffic was busier during mid-week games, peaking on the BBC site on 17 June when England played Switzerland.

"England’s first game against France fell on a weekend, and so football fans were able to watch the game live on TV at home or in the pub," said Gabrielle Prior, European data analyst for Nielsen//NetRatings.

"However, the second game took place on a working day, and websites that offered minute-by-minute analysis including BBC Sport and Sky Sports experienced the heaviest traffic."

This is the first time Nielsen//NetRatings has produced daily web traffic data for an individual event - a one off for Euro 2004.
