Internet journalists can attend a digital storytelling workshop for free, courtesy of fellowships from the Online News Association (ONA).

The digital storytelling masterclass will guide both newly qualified and more experienced journalists through the process of creating innovative multimedia journalism.

Sessions will include a workshop on translating stories in different formats, an examination of effective multimedia news sites and will also look at how new digital technologies will influence news platforms.

"Applicants need to demonstrate what they hope this kind of training will contribute to their own skills and career, as well as to their newsrooms," said Dianna Lynch, executive director of ONA.

All members of the association are eligible to apply for the fellowships, which cover tuition, travel and accommodation expenses up to $3,200. ONA membership costs $50 for one year and provides digital journalists with various professional services, including networking opportunities, a newsletter and an annual awards and conference ceremony.

Ten fellowships are available in total, and applications must be submitted by 15 October. The association says preference will be given to smaller publishers and independent news sites.

"A survey of journalists last spring reported that lack of training is the biggest complaint about the profession," Ms Lynch told dotJournalism.

"It's a particularly acute problem in mid-sized and small newsrooms, where staff and resources tend to be more limited."

The course is being run by The Media Centre, a division of the American Press Institute, with support from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. The workshop takes place between 7-11 December in Nashville, USA.
