Freelance journalists have organised a national day of protest tomorrow to highlight low pay and copyright abuse in the UK publishing industry.

Action includes a demonstration outside BBC Worldwide, which has been accused of imposing rights-grabbing contracts on freelance workers at the Radio Times, and a presentation to members of the Scottish Parliament.

Branches of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) have also organised social events and workshops to help freelancers address working issues.

Abuse of copyright and low pay are two of the biggest problems faced by freelancers.

Some national newspapers have not increased freelance pay for ten years, claims Tim Dawson, chair of the NUJ's freelance council.

"The idea that we should work for these ridiculous rates of pay is unacceptable. Something needs to be done to take hold of our working lives," he said.
