Online auction site eBay ran its first ever advert on UK TV last night, coinciding with the site's fifth birthday.

Ads have the tagline 'Buy it. Sell it. Love it.' and feature purchases made by colourful characters around the UK.

Traffic to the site has been building steadily for the past 18 months, according to web traffic analyst Hitwise. eBay accounts for more than 3.5 per cent of all web traffic in the UK, up from 1.5 per cent in January 2003.
