BBC Radio 5 Live broadcasts took away gold prize for both Best News & Current Affairs programme as well as Best Breaking News Coverage, at the Sony Radio Academy Awards last night.

The broadcaster's Victoria Derbyshire was named as the gold winner of the Best News & Current Affairs Programme, which is edited by Louisa Compton.

In an announcement outlining the winners in full, which shows a total of six gold prizes for Radio 5 Live programmes on the night, the judges described Derbyshire's work as "exceptional broad ranging news and current affairs of the highest standard".

"Victoria proves herself an outstanding, versatile presenter, who is clearly backed by a strong production team. She is challenging and engaging, while giving the feeling that she is representing each and every listener.".

Silver prize went to the news team at LBC Nightly News, while bronze was awarded to the BBC World Service's Newshour.

BBC Radio 5 Live took gold again in the Best Breaking News Coverage category, for its 5 Live Drive "Birth of the Coalition" coverage.

The BBC's Radio Cumbria coverage of the West Cumbria Shootings took silver, praised by the judges for telling "a chilling, violent story with authority, compassion and a real understanding of the impact on the local community".

The bronze prize went to Real Radio North East for "The Last Days of Raoul Moat". The station also scooped gold in the Production Awards for Best News Special, for "Raoul Moat – The Final Hours".

Matthew Price of BBC Radio 4, took gold for News Journalist of the Year. The judges said he "paints vivid pictures in the listener’s head and the use of sound is imaginative and haunting".
