Mr Gongadze was editor of Ukrainian news site Ukrainska Pravda and was investigating government corruption. His headless body was found in a ditch outside Kiyv in September 2000, but the killers have never been brought to justice.
“This case has come to symbolise the yearning for justice and democracy in the Ukraine," said IFJ general secretary Aidan White, speaking at a press conference in Strasbourg yesterday.
"It should be a top priority for the new government to bring this long-running saga of corruption, incompetence and injustice to an end."
