Hosted in association with the Society for News Design (SND), this year's awards focused on branding and design.
The UK's Herald Express came second in the small publication category with Rock Stars, a competition to create a new band selected by readers from entrants, who submitted their auditions across a range of social media sites.
German newspaper group Axel Springer took first and second in the large newspaper category for its titles Die Welt, for its rebranding across print and online as Welt; and Bild, for its user-generated advertising initiative.
