The Independent has joined forces with the Press Association (PA) to boost its offering of video news.

As part of the new deal, the PA will provide more than 100 packages a week to the newspaper website. Each 90-second clip will focus on a single news item, covering news, sport and entertainment, according to a release.

The video player is currently accessible via an embedded link in an image within an article, which launches a pop-up player when clicked. The videos will appear alongside both PA and non-PA copy on the website.

The partnership is the latest video deal from the PA, which has produced video content since 2005, following the launch of its video news wire for raw footage in April this year.

"We are working closely with customers to supply this content in a format that meets the individual requirements of their business. For the Independent, this means partnering with a video technology specialist for distribution and delivery to provide users with the highest quality experience of our content," said Tony Watson, managing director for the Press Association, in the release.

Octopus Media Technology, a video content management and delivery firm, will provide the technology behind the Independent's increased video output and video player.

"The Press Association's expertise in providing quality news video quickly and professionally will give our video service some real immediacy and depth, while Octopus' player is a simple, but rather elegant way for users to interact," added Jimmy Leach, editorial director for digital at The Independent, in the release.
