Drug war website NarcoNews.com is facing legal action after printing claims that Mexican banking supremo Roberto Hernandez Ramirez is involved in the cocaine trade.

Al Giordano, NarcoNews publisher, plans to take the stand and lift the lid on the Mexican drugs trade as part of his defence.

Ramirez is suing for libel on behalf of his bank Banamex, which was recently bought for $12.5 million by Citibank. He claims the reports have harmed Banamex's reputation.

Attorney Thomas Lesser, representing NarcoNews, is claiming that the court cannot allow Banamex to sue the website in New York for content uploaded in Mexico. He claims this would set a precedent for any libel plaintiff permission to sue any website anywhere in the world.

The case is due to be heard on 20 July 2001.
