The role grew more than I could have imagined over those three years, along with a massive surge in interest and recognition of the importance of online publishing, citizen media, web advertising, multimedia reporting and all the rest. I am very proud to have contributed to the growth of journalism.co.uk which, if you did not know, has been publishing since 1999. The success of the site comes down to the hard work and faith of a small but very dedicated team, so thank you to all of them and keep up the great work.
It is very addictive working in and writing about the industry, partly because journalists are such a fascinating species themselves; passionate, dedicated and characteristically persistent in finding out what this whole new world of web publishing is all about, and how best to understand and embrace it. Not infrequently I have found myself evangelising to the doubters, explaining that all these changes are ultimately positive, that newspapers are about news and not about paper, and that good journalism and good journalists will always be needed. I do finally believe that the Canuters are a minority.
Beyond that, the wider citizen media movement promises to foster a more engaged, involved and questioning citizenry and that can only be a powerful force for the good. It is a new era in which people are encouraged to express, share and discuss ideas, opinions and experiences - the very stuff that makes us human, that helps us learn, that helps us engage with and understand our world. Too bad we will all get RSI and screen blindness before we reach true nirvana, but you cannot have everything...
