Headshot of John Bradshaw, retiring Johnston Press executive
John Bradshaw, who set up Johnston Press' digital division, is to retire from the company this week.

Bradshaw, who launched some of the first local newspaper websites in the UK, will leave on Friday.

Prior to joining the publisher Bradshaw launched a series of free newspapers in the 1970s, which he later sold to emap.

After stints as managing director of the Peterborough Evening Telegraph and group managing director of Thomson Free Newspapers, he rejoined emap in 1993.

He then set up the firm's digital division before Johston Press acquired the group's local newspapers in 1996.

The company now publishes over 300 websites.
