K24 and Royal Media Services have joined the first all-African online video news agency, designed to help African freelancers and broadasters earn better money for their work.

Kenyan media organisations, K24, a 24-hour news channel which features local eyewitness reports, and Royal Media Services, a collection of media services, will partner the A24 agency, which launched last month.

"We are delighted to join hands with K24 and Royal Media Services to open up access to their content to broadcasters across the world seeking a fresh and informed local insight into African issues," Salim Amin, A24 Media chairman, said in a release.

"We are confident that these will be the first of many national broadcasters across the continent who embrace the A24 Media platform as a unique way to gain greater share of voice for Africa’s stories," he said.

Amin also used the opportunity to flag up a new section of the site called 'African Leaders', which will contain biographies of prominent African leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe and Mwai Kibaki and look at their respective achievements and failures.

Amin's hope is that features such as these will make his agency 'the continent's "go to" source of broadcast content on African leaders'.

"The service is focusing on diversifying its content and is going from strength to strength as it seeks to engage broadcasters across the continent," the release said.

A24 edits material from African broadcasters and freelancers before making it available for purchase on its website.

It has perhaps not grown as fast as Amin expected when he spoke to Journalism.co.uk in September - as yet, only 20 stories have been uploaded to the site.
