Fwix, the local newswire service aggregating online sources which recently launched in the UK, has signed a deal with the New York Times Company.

The agreement will see Fwix's technology used to bring in more hyperlocal content to the company's regional media sites, including Boston.com and NYTimes.com and 15 regional newspaper titles across the US.

The aggregation service, which already covers 80 US and Canadian cities and 12 UK areas, uses in-house technology to aggregate and filter news from sources, including local newspaper websites and blogs, relevant to a specific area.

The first NYT Co. site to go live with the Fwix service is the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat in California, which is using the aggregator's service on its 'Your Town' news page. The Fwix section also includes sponsored items, providing links back to Fwix's directory of business advertisers.

Details of how Fwix will be implemented on the other sites have not been announced, but, according to TechCrunch, the two-year-old start-up has a revenue share agreement in place with NYT Co.

In a competitive marketplace, Fwix, which has secured close to $3 million in funding, will better filter sources for readers to differentiate itself from other aggregators, Fwix's CEO Darian Shirazi told Journalism.co.uk in October.

Last month Fwix launched a new version of its API so local content featured on its wire will show other relevant stories by topic or by location. The deal with the Times is not exclusive and Fwix's API allows third parties to integrate its wire into their sites or applications.
