Research into European news consumption has revealed that regional news leads both print and online markets.

The study, by Forrester Research, also shows some contradictory reading habits, with people regularly switching between different titles both on and offline.

Most north Europeans appear to prefer traditional newspapers to their online counterparts - apart from in Sweden, where 29 per cent of consumers read more news on the web than in print.

The Swedish, Dutch and English are the biggest consumers of news in all formats. However The Sun, Britain's biggest-selling newspaper, struggles to gain a serious web readership.

Italy's La Repubblica site is well-visited, while France's L'Equipe struggles to attract users.

Nearly 70 per cent of The Guardian's regular readership also visits guardianunlimited.co.uk on a regular basis. However, nearly 20 per cent also visit The Sun's site, while only seven per cent admit to buying the print version.
