A friend is just off to Japan for a week and told me about a fantastic free trial for e-Navi, a PDA service offered by Tokyo's Narita airport.

e-Navi provides visitors with a PDA featuring a sightseeing guide, introduction to Japan, airport guide, free domestic phone calls and unrestricted internet access.

There is also a built-in translation tool from English, Mandarin or Korean into Japanese, which might help cut down on the Bill Murray moments. ("Lick my stocking?")

If you are visiting Japan before 18 March 2005 and fancy a go, you can apply online.

Down sides: you have to give it back when you go home.
