A Ukrainian man has confessed to the murder of web journalist Gyorgy Gongadze, whose decapitated body was found in a ditch outside Kiev nearly four years ago.

According to an announcement made by the Ukrainian prosecutor's office yesterday, a man named only as 'K' told investigators that he had decapitated Mr Gongadze. The man is believed to have been prosecuted for previous murders.

The Ukrainian authorities have been under increasing pressure to bring Mr Gongadze's killers to justice. Mr Gongadze was editor of news web site Ukrainska Pravda and had been investigating corruption in the Ukrainian government. He was abducted and murdered in September 2000.

Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma has been implicated in the murder after a former bodyguard released audio tapes that appeared to record the president and his associates plotting to harm Mr Gongadze. Mr Kuchma has denied the accusations and insists the tapes are fake.

An investigation published on Saturday by UK newspaper The Independent details how Ukrainian opposition MPs have registered their intention to impeach the president over the case.

"The committee has established the fact that the key organiser of illegal activities in the Gongadze case was the President of Ukraine," said Hryhoriy Omelchenko of the opposition Our Ukraine party.
