Steve Busfield has been with the Guardian since 1997, most recently as executive editor of Guardian Business. He previously worked on regional newspapers and also reported for Press Gazette in 1993.
"MediaGuardian is one of the world's leading sources of media news and Steve has the perfect background and skills to edit the site," said Emily Bell, editor in chief of Guardian Unlimited.
"He inherits a first class team of reporters and production journalists who keep the site well ahead of the competition."
Steve Busfield replaces Lisa O'Carroll who had been with the Media Guardian site since its launch five years ago. Ms O'Carroll is moving to Dublin as assistant editor of Ireland on Sunday.
Press Gazette is due to be relaunched this autumn by new owner Piers Morgan, and is expected to aggressively compete against MediaGuardian.
