National freesheet Metro has joined forces with mobile network Three to launch a dual iPhone and iPad app.

The app, which will be available from 21 February, will work across both platforms and allow users to access a scrollable digital edition of the newspaper. It will also give include the option to search archived editions and articles and to download single pages or whole editions to read offline.

Jamie Walters, digital director of Metro said: "Our previous apps have been very successful and we benefited from being one of the first to market.  We are really excited to be working with Three and expect the universal app to be just as popular.

"This new app gives our users the format they prefer in one easy download. Featuring page turning technology it allows users to enjoy a paper like experience in a digital format."

Metro's first iPhone app, which launched around 12 months ago, has had around 350,000 downloads so far while its iPad app, launched in June last year, has had around 50,000.

The daily freesheet is the third most read newspaper in the UK with more than 1.38 million copies distributed every weekday across 33 UK cities.

The newspaper's website, Metro.co.uk averaged 3.5 million unique monthly browsers in November 2010, compared with around one million in November 2009.

Assistant managing director Rich Mead said that the title aimed to reach 5 million users per month by this time next year.
